"High Water Everywhere" - Song by Charley Patton [1929]
This song was written about the Great Flood of 1927 that killed over 250 people and flooded over 23,000 miles of land. It was one of the worst natural disasters in United States history. Particularly interesting about the song is how Patton explores the racial structures of oppression in Mississippi. For example, he sang: 'Lord the whole round country, man, is overflowed. You know, I can't stay here, I'm bound to go where it's high boy. I would go to the hill country, but they got me barred.'
