Assignment:
1. Do Officers Joseph and Sharpe justify Muir's theory on "good policing" (as summarized by Klockars) or provide a new perspective on it? Be specific: what part of the theory do they justify or put a new perspective on and how do they do it? Explain why you think Officers Joseph and Sharpe are "good police" or not. What organizational and/or personal attributes do they manifest which makes your assessment possible?
2. Given what you watched in these two videos, how could you better prepare yourself for interactions with mental illness as well as attendent and interconnected challenges such as homelessness and drug addiction during your (current or future) careeer in the criminal justice system? Be specific. Think of possible classes, internships, research projects, volunteer/service opportunities, etc. Share if you have already engaged in such preparation or not.
3. Imagine you are a consultant with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). You spend a couple of days in the homicide unit of the BPD and observe what transpires through page 46 of the Simon reading. Then you observe the homicide investigation and consequent interaction of the routine way the detectives do things (and their mindsets) with Robin William's character, suspects, and community members (as seen in the Homicide video).
You are charged with making recommendations that will result in a) a higher homicide clearance rate, b) increasing the quality of cases that move forward to trial (hopefully leading to more convictions and less people being charged erroneously), and c) improving the quality of police-community relations. You have a few more months to go with you consultancy but what are two things that immediately jump out to you as things (behaviors, mind sets, workplace conditions, practices, etc.). In need of immediate improvement? Why? How would you improve them? What would the response be for each of your two identified areas of improvement?
