From a selection of several, the student will be assigned one scenario which provides a description of a child. This child will have limited interest in specific curriculum areas that could be related to their style of learning, to the types of activities available to them or for other reasons.
1. Read through the scenario of the child you have been assigned.
2. Identify which of Howard Gardner's intelligences you feel the child is strong in.
3. Identify reasons why you feel that these are their strong intelligences.
4. Identify curriculum areas the child does not appear to be eagerly involved in.
5. Identify reasons why you feel the child has not wanted to be involved in those areas.
6. Using the characteristics of their strong intelligences, plan three activities in curriculum areas the child is not typically involved, and that would encourage the child to develop new skills and expand their learning.
7. Write your three activities on Activity Planning Sheets.
8. In these, include a summary of the information (above) for submission.
Erika loves to explore the environment - both indoors and outdoors. During her explorations, she tries to figure out how everything works. With a magnifying glass in her hand, she will walk around and ask questions: "How does this work?" "What is it for?" "Who made it?" etc. When educators are picking up books from the library, they select books on "How things work," so that Erika can have a reference. Erika spends much of her time playing by herself. Periodically one or two other children with similar interest will join her. Erika seems uncomfortable in larger groups and will only participate if the educators are asking for help to solve a problem. Erika enjoys sequencing the life cycles of animals and plants and is very knowledgeable about it. Erika will play games with other children but will ask an educator to explain the rules to other children. When Erika is exploring she does not go into many learning centres to stay for long - especially art and dramatic play.
