Case: One key difference between data marts and data warehouses is that data warehouses support data storage on an enterprise level and hold information that provides a global view of the organization and different departments. The data marts, however, are more focused on one department or portion of the business, providing quicker access to the data that a specific department needs. Since the data warehouses hold detailed information for several areas of organizations, data marts are authorized to pull specific data to support the development and analysis of the specified department. Another key difference is that data warehouses are usually controlled tightly because they provide general information on the organization. Only personnel at an enterprise level can access and manage the data warehouses, along with the IT administrators. The data mart is usual contained and accessed in a departmental capacity with the assistance of the IT department.
