A study showed that within 12 weeks after adding tetracycline to chicken feed at one particular chicken farm, more than 97% of chicken intestinal isolates were resistant to tetracycline. But a large proportion of the intestinal flora also were resistant to Ampicillin, Mercury, Sulfonamides, and Streptomycin, which were NOT used in the feed.

Why were isolates resistant to multiple antibiotics, even though only Tetracycline was used in the feed? Also, can someone please explain (with a sketch and short verbal captions) the steps leading to the formation of the plasmid responsible for this resistance?
