Question: Why was the impact of the events of September 11 arguably more devastating than other "spectacular events" discussed in the text?
September 11th was so devastating because most Americans believed we were safe and secure. Other than Dec 7, 1941, and the burning of Washington in the War of 1812, Sept 11 was the deadliest attack in American History. The events on September 11th ensured the whole world knew no one was safe, including civilians. It was assumed if America was ever attacked the military would act first. This was an attack on civilians, first responders, the airlines and the economy. The intent was to instill fear.
