2. Thesis: The Haitian Revolution was a momentous event in history, Haiti became the first Black independent country in the New World.

3. Argument

• The Haitian Revolution was a symbol of hope for a once free people: For far too long, slaves were subjected to inhumane treatment. Many resorted to unorthodox solutions (self-harm/suicide) as a means to evade the cruel reality which they were forced to submit to; the Haitian Revolt provide the perfect opportunity for them to gain freedom. It demonstrated that it was possible to resist and overthrow oppressive systems.

• The Haitian Revolution created an international conundrum which was paramount in the abolishment of slavery: It ended Napoleon's quest to establish a French empire in the western hemisphere which ultimately lead to the end of the transatlantic slave trade.

• The Haitian Revolution caused a Colonial Policies: The revolution caused European powers to realize the possibility of a rebellion. This ultimately led to a shift in colonial policies, leading to changes in their policies.
