A 65-year-old white man is admitted to the hospital with myalgia, severe headache, and a stiff neck. Physical findings show that the patient is lethargic and febrile. The physician suspects meningitis with associated bacteremia and requests the following tests: CBC, blood culture, and lumbar puncture for CSF aspiration to include leukocyte count, protein, and glucose levels, and bacterial culture.

The following laboratory results are obtained:

1. CBC shows increased leukocyte count; other parameters within normal reference ranges

2. Blood culture: growth

3. CSF

  • WBC 1,200 cells/µL (reference range: adult 0 - 5/µL
  • CSF Protein: 150 mg/dL (reference range 20 - 40 mg/dL)
  • Glucose: 35 mg/dL (reference range 45 - 60 mg/dL)
  • Culture: growth
