Assignment:

The plant genus Carex consists of sedges and is one of the most diverse plant genera with nearly 2,000 species. This group experienced a very rapid radiation with many speciation events occurring within several million years. In contrast, the divergence between ferns and other seed plants occurred over a long time-scale hundreds of millions of years ago. Nadia is a graduate student in a lab focused on plant systematics that uses sequencing data to build phylogenies for different plant groups. One project for her dissertation research will focus on the phylogeny for the Carex genus. A second project will focus on a phylogeny for ferns and the seed plant groups gymnosperms and angiosperms. In which of these projects do you think Nadia might observe gene trees that do not correspond to the species tree (incomplete lineage sorting)? Justify your prediction explaining why the gene tree sometimes does not match the species tree and what circumstances lead to it occurring more often.
