Scenario: 1
The social issue I have chosen to address is racial discrimination, particularly in relation to the increase in police brutality against minority communities. Over the past several years, there have been numerous tragic incidents where minority individuals have been killed or subjected to violent acts by law enforcement without justified cause. This persistent issue highlights a critical need for reform in order to foster meaningful change.
To effectively address racial discrimination and police brutality, several initiatives could be implemented. First, providing therapy and mental health support for police officers can help address underlying issues that may contribute to aggressive behavior. Additionally, fostering greater community involvement in the development and enforcement of laws-especially those related to gun control-can lead to more equitable practices and improved trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
Moreover, conducting thorough mental health evaluations of officers can ensure that individuals in positions of power are fit to serve and protect. By taking these steps, we can work towards a more just and equitable society where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their race or background.
Scenario 2
I chose the social issue of gender underrepresentation in the courts and elected offices across the United States because it affects every community, from local schools and library boards to the office of the President of the United States. The underrepresentation of women and gender-diverse people dulls the advancements made towards equality in the workforce, in education, or within healthcare, resulting in inequalities that affect socio-economic advancement. Women and gender-diverse folks have different lived experiences, so we need to be at the table to craft policies around reproductive rights, family leave, childcare, and all manner of issues that are critical for our communities.
Improved gender diversity in the judiciary can also increase public confidence in the judicial system, increasing perceptions of fairness and legitimacy within gender groups who might not see themselves reflected in an overwhelmingly male judiciary. Women and gender-diverse lawmakers have a greater tendency to support social welfare programs that can make an enormous difference in the lives of families, children, and low-income people, reducing economic inequality. When more women and gender-diverse leaders are visible, they can inspire greater political participation among women, girls, and LGBTQ+ adults and youth, as well as the next wave of leaders. Beyond that, greater diversity in leadership can often result in more creative and long-term thinking policies.
Based on scenarios one and two please answer the following:
- Share perspectives your classmate may not have considered.
- Comment on areas where your classmate could provide greater detail.
Give specific feedback that would help your classmates revise their work. For example:
- Are there other reasons why social change is needed from the perspective of the community your classmate identified?
- Are there other communities your classmate could explore that are also affected by the issue?
- Are there other social changes that would benefit the communities affected that your classmate has not considered?
