Approximately 1g liver was placed on the sand, and the larvae were allowed to consume it. A jar with the same setup, but without larvae, was used as a control.

Once samples were placed in their assigned jars for VOC sampling, they were sealed with a layer of Parafilm, covered with a modified lid and then attached to a volatile pump system (Parker Hannafin Corporation, Cleveland, OH, USA) (Figure M6). A glass tube containing Haysep Q adsorbent was inserted into a hole in the lid of the mason jar and an activated charcoal filter (General Carbon Corporation, Paterson, NJ, USA) was also inserted into another hole in the lid with the help of a glass pipette to filter the air entering the jar.

Analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) released by insects' stages (immature and mature) can enables the entomologist to distinguish the feeding third instar from post feeding and young pupae from the older one. According to Frederickx and Co-workers, the volatile profile has shown a variation in both composition and quantity in larvae and pupa of Calliphora vicina (Robineau-Desvoidy) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) (Frederickx,2012a).
