This course traces the Black Freedom struggle and its legacy. African American History is American History, and should be able to be taught at every level, K-12 and in higher education. As students, you have advanced the legacy of the struggle by taking this course. However, there is a threat to teaching the struggles of Black Americans, as the AP course "African American Studies", which has been under development for 10 years and set to be piloted in high schools next year, has been banned by the governer of Florida and its board of education. This backlash against the teaching of African American studies may spread in the U.S. Considering this, please answer the questions below in your discussion:
1. Why should Black History be taught in the United States?
2. What are two things you have learned in this course about the African American experience?
3. What is something that the course did not cover that could be added?
4. If you were invited to be a Black History Month speaker for an elementary school in your community, what topic or theme would you discuss with the kids? How would you inspire the kids to study Black History? Be creative.
