Question: In September 2020, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy approved a new national security strategy for Ukraine that included future aspirations to join NATO. On the 30th of November 2021, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Ukrainian membership into NATO would constitute a "red line" for Russia. Despite repeated threats from Moscow and a large-scale Russian military build-up on the Ukrainian border, Zelenskyy refused to back down on the question of NATO membership. These tensions escalated and on the 24th of February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, triggering a major war in Europe and crushing international sanctions against Moscow.
