Case Study: Task: First, read the the letter from Richard Frethorne (1623) and the letter from Edward Winslow (1621) If you have trouble accessing the reading, contact your professor immediately! Second, identify if the documents are primary or secondary sources. Third, once you've determined if the sources are primary or secondary, apply the appropriate list of questions from the previous module's assignments (choose the correct category: primary sources and secondary sources) to these documents. Fourth, now that you've answered those questions, perform the following analyses:

  • Challenge the reliability of these documents. Ask the writers these critical questions:
  • Are they presenting themselves as eyewitnesses or is there knowledge second-hand or hearsay?
  • Do these people have a reason to lie or exaggerate the truth? How would an exaggerated version of facts presented to their readers benefit themselves?
  • If they're writing about other people or groups or places are they recording their observations or opinions (or a mixture)? Can their comments on others be trusted?
  • Any thing you might think of that calls into question the sources' reliablity?
