Question: A middle-aged man comes out of the examination room and stops to make a follow-up appointment. You notice the tears in his eyes and ask how you can help. He sobs, "Not only must I go home and tell my wife I've been leading a life as a bisexual, I must also tell her I'm positive for HIV." You can respond by saying, "You play with fire, you're going to get burned. I pity your wife." Or, "Personally, I'd never go home. I'd drive my car off a cliff." Or again you can strive to put your prejudices and biases aside and respond, "This must be very difficult for you. I am sorry. Would it help if you asked your wife to talk with us or to make an appointment with the doctor? What can I do for you?" Can you see yourself making any of these responses? Justify your response. Might you just ignore the client's obvious distress? Why or why not?
