What people remember about a work of art is the artist. In many cases, that artwork had a patron: someone who commissioned the work and may or may not have had ample say in how it was constructed. A patron can be the church, the monarchy, or a wealthy individual. Choose any work of art from Chapters 1 - 9 and discuss the role of the patron. Identify the artwork by figure number, name of the artist, name of work, name of the patron, and the period in which it was created.

Consider the following sub-questions:

1. Who is the patron?
2. Do we know how involved the patron was in the work's construction?
3. Why might the patron have commissioned this work?
4. Is the patron IN the work of art? What might this say? How is the patron depicted?
