Quality Management in Healthcare: A Systems Approach

Analyze the pros and cons of each provided goal statement in the table below. After completing Part One, discuss your insights and process in Part Two.

Part One: Practice anticipating unintended consequences

1. Select a process that takes place in a healthcare services organization and place it in column A

2. Identify stakeholders who influence the process (think groups, people, departments mostly upstream) and place them in column B

3. Identify who is influenced by the process (people and activities downstream from the process) and place them in column C

4. Explore another level of influence by thinking about who influences column B, and place them in column D

5. Explore another level of who is influenced by the list on column C, list your answers in column E

6. Name at least one unintended consequence that is possible when a change is made to the process identified in column A. Be as specific as possible using an example change to the process, and what unintended consequences it might create for specific parties listed in the different columns affected by the change.

7. How might this unintended consequence impact the ‘creative tension' (p. 213) commonly felt between departments and teams?

Part Two: Discussion

Using insights from this week's reading (CH 11 & CH12), professional experiences you have as an employee in a healthcare setting, and any additional research, discuss the challenges of incremental change in quality improvement. Why might incremental change be more sustainable or impactful? When is incremental change not ideal and what models can support rapid or larger changes?

Assignment

To do: Make a submission

Chapter 11 explored several models for designing and implementing improvements. One of this chapter's discussions is particularly significant to master when considering improvement efforts: the unintended consequences of change (p. 209). Anticipating unintended consequences can be hard work, but necessary as leaders implement quality improvement initiatives of healthcare services.

To complete your assignment, download the Unintended Consequences Worksheet provided below. Complete parts 1 & 2, which are an adaptation of Exercise 11.2 (p. 215).

Be sure to utilize the textbook and integrate at least three peer-reviewed sources along with their citations and references. Your assignment must be APA formatted and include at least 1200 words.
