Louise attends an appointment with her primary care physician complaining of fatigue and unintended weight loss. She is trying to get pregnant and contributes some of these symptoms to stress and anxiety but wanted to get her symptoms checked out. She reports that in addition to fatigue, she also experiences intermittent bouts of diarrhea. She is always hungry, despite eating 3 x meals per day, and rarely feels good after eating, often experiencing stomach pain and nausea. Louise considers herself an energetic person, but recently, as her symptoms have worsened, she no longer has time to go to her favorite yoga class or run in the park. She reports her mother also had GI issues and trouble maintaining her weight and her niece just got diagnosed with celiac disease.
Typical daily intake:
Breakfast: Coffee with half & half creamer 1 English muffin or 2 slices of toast with peanut butter
Mid-morning snack: Wholegrain crackers with avocado
Lunch: Packaged tomato soup (she always buys the low sodium variety) Grilled cheese sandwich made on whole wheat bread
Snack: Handful of pretzels
Dinner: Breaded chicken with wild rice and grilled broccoli
Dessert: 1 chocolate chip cookie
