A recent graduate of Starfleet Academy has been assigned to your Galaxy Class Starship, the USS Enterprise-D. You are currently serving as medical personnel on this ship. While you are conducting the routine Starfleet physical exams for this new ensign, you are presented with a question on bone density. The ensign is concerned and says something along the lines of "Doesn't space travel zap the minerals from my bones? What's going to happen to my bone density during this 5 year mission?"

You are puzzled by this question mainly because of the simulated gravity on Starfleet spacecraft...and because this is TNG, not the 5 year mission of TOS :D.

To answer this ensign, consider the following in your repsonse:

Why is the simulated gravity on Starfleet ships important in how you will answer the question regarding bone density? (What role does gravity/stress play on bone density and maintenance?)
