In TV courtroom dramas, we often see these amazing cross-examinations and usually the very emotional closing statements. Which do you think is most important, the opening statement or the closing statement, and why? Cross-examination can be very effective, but it can also be dangerous. Why? If your star witness has a few "blemishes" (information that might hurt his credibility or believability), but you do not know if the opposing side is aware of these issues, should you raise them in your direct examination or take a chance that they won't come out in cross? Why or why not? How would you prepare such a witness for his testimony? What is the difference between "preparing" someone and "coaching" him or her? Why is the difference crucial?
