For this assignment, read this case from the Santa Clara University Markkula Center for Applied Ethics:

While this is obviously dated, it refers to the election of 2016, it provides context to a significant issue that continues today: what responsibility does social media have when it comes to "fake news"?  

As you answer, consider not only the events prior to the election of 2016, but also the ways in which social media was used (and has evolved) in the years since. 

Consider the creation of sites such as Parler, which refuses to moderate content, and look at sites such as Twitter, which refused to tolerate certain forms of speech. 

After reading the case, answer these questions in essay form (you do not have to answer the question at the end of the case itself):

1. Why is managing fake news an ethical problem?  
2. Discuss which TWO universal ethical principles may be relevant or in violation (Be specific). 
3. Resolve this dilemma in an ethically defensible manner using one of more of the three theories that we have discussed (consequentialist, deontological, and/or virtue). Briefly explain the shortcomings of the theory/theories that you used to resolve the case. Did you need different aspects of multiple theories to resolve the case? If so, why?
