HIV rates are not uniformly high throughout Africa. West Africa has low rates, similar to those of some large cities in the US. Ghana, for example, has a prevalence of about one percent. However, one community in Ghana, the Krobo people, has a much higher infection rate. Krobo people lived on the Volta River, which was dammed in nineteen sixty-one to create a significant hydroelectric power plant. While electricity was good for Ghana, the dam was terrible for the Krobo. The dam flooded the valley, displacing Krobo people into other communities where they could not acquire land, homes, or jobs. Many men left the country looking for work; many women turned to transactional sex to make ends meet. HIV rates among the Krobo are highest in Ghana, at over ten percent.
