Topic: In no uncertain terms, Rieman and Leighton (2020) contend that " the goal of our criminal justice system is not to eliminate crime or to achieve justice, but to project to the American public a credible image of the threat of crime as a threat of the poor" (p. 1).

Question: Based on the readings and other course materials for this week, share your thoughts about this critical perspective provided by Reiman and Leighton. Is it the case that we have neglected the underlying causes of crime through disinvestment in order to keep those in power in power? To keep the rich, richer? Why is it that we have such a derogatory view of poverty? Why are we so fascinated with punishment?
