Why is it that gazelles are more likely to stot in response to coursing predators than to stalking predators (african wild dogs vs cheeahs)? I thought it would make sense that it would be profitable to stot in reponse to a stalking predator, because the predator will likely retreat if the element of surprise is eliminated. So how come it is the other way around?
