Why is it important to understand the different stages of a crisis? Apply each of the four stages to a crisis or event that has occurred nationally within the last 12 months.
1. It is important to understand the four stages of crisis so that you can effectively help those in each stage. As a law enforcement officer, you need to be able to walk up on a scene or look at a case and tell what stage of crisis it is in Some of the stages can move more quickly than others, so it is important to be able to identify them. The first stage is Precondition which is when the smaller events happen that lead up to the major crisis. An example of this is the shooting of the Police officer in Dallas, TX. The events that led up to this were the Black Lives Matter protest and the Baton Rouge Shooting of Alton Sterling (cnn.com). The next stage is the Trigger Event stage. This is when the crisis is escalating and when everyone starts getting nervous and upset. An event this past year that had a major trigger point is the Orlando nightclub shooting. When the gunman had everyone in the bathroom and was threatening to kill them. This was the part where everyone was scared and did not know if they would make it out alive.
The third crisis stage is the crisis. This is the climax part of life cycle. The crisis that comes to mind is when the shooter started shooting the police officers in Dallas, Louisiana, and the people in the nightclub in Orlando. That was the climax. That is when the hands-off approach is kicked to the curb and the others must start fighting back to save lives. The fourth and last part crisis is the postcrisis. This is when the crisis is over and it is time to start planning to prevent crisis like that from happening again in the future. The events that stick out the most are the ones I have mentioned above. Seeing how the community and the whole United States came together to back the men and women in blue was amazing. Agencies around the country are planning how to keep crisis from escalating to the extreme that we have seen in the past 12 months.

2. It is important to understand the different stages of a crisis. We can better understand the stages of a crisis by being prepared for an unforeseen crisis or event. The more that we practice for a crisis, the better the crisis can be handled, which will help keep the "organization" unified and resilient.
I chose the black lives matter crisis, which I know is very controversial right now all over the world. The preconditions of this crisis are, to me the racism and the indifferences that we have among all racial groups. We can even go a little deeper, and go back to the days of slavery for a precondition. The trigger events were when seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman and then was not convicted of shooting him. Then eighteen-year-old Mike Brown was killed by a white officer from Ferguson Missouri (Garza, 2016 ). These events and much more got the ball rolling on the Black Lives Matter Crisis. The crisis of this issue is since the Black Lives Matter movement began in August 2014 and until July 2016, there has been eleven cops shot dead and nine wounded by the Black Lives Matter supporters ( Hoft, 2016). There has been nothing but bloodshed, looting, riots, and our nation being torn apart by hate and indifferences. Our jobs as police officers was already a stressful job to have before this crisis began, but now the fear, tears, and stress of being an officer have taken over to the point of being on edge and paranoid constantly. The post crisis of this event is still happening every day. We as officers are learning to build better relationships in the black communities, better train our officers for high-risk situations, and not let the actions of a handful of people ruin our perception of the world.
