A young Nigerian, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, had traveled to Yemen to learn Arabic and conservative Islam. He met with the radical American-Yemeni mullah Anwar al-Awlaki and was trained in explosives while he was there. Although his father back in Nigeria reported his son's radicalization to U.S. authorities, he was still able to gain passage aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit. Nearing its destination, he attempted to detonate an explosive charge in his underpants but was unsuccessful. In 2011, two noteworthy things happened: al-Awlaki was killed by a U.S. drone strike in Yemen; Abdulmutallab pleaded guilty to eight charges, including the attempted murder of 289 people.
