In our study of membranes, we learned that phospholipids are amphipathic molecules. Briefly tell me what this means, and draw a diagram to illustrate the kind of structure(s) phospholipids form in water.

Briefly explain FRAP and tell me what is used for.

Why is a mutation that causes a constitutively (continually) active RTK even in the absence of a ligand likely to result in cancer? Be brief but specific. Hint: what sequence of events would such a mutation activate?

The signaling mechanisms used by steroid hormones and their intracellular receptors are relatively simple compared with those used by GPCR's and RTK's because they have far fewer components than receptors that employ second messengers. Can steroid signal transduction lead to amplification of the initial signal, and if so, how?

In cell biology, comparisons can often help us understand mechanism. In an example of this, to highlight the differences between membrane channels and carrier proteins, it is said that channels are like bridges and carrier protein transporters are like ferry boats. Discuss the validity of this comparison and be sure to consider the speed and selectivity of transport in your answer.
