Qualitative research can also be described as an effective model that occurs in a natural setting that enables the researcher to develop a level of detail from being highly involved in the actual experiences (Driessnack, et al, 2007). The phenomenological study and ethnographic research both are most common type of qualitative research conducted to understand the real human experiences and their perceptions through interview, direct observations and inquiries where participants are purposively selected.
The purpose of phenomenological study is "to understand an experience from the participants point of view". The focus is on the participant's perceptions of the event or situation and the study tries to answer the question of the experience (Williams, 2007).
Understanding the lived experience of people is a concern of both phenomenological and grounded theory research. Phenomenological research would aim to comprehend the lived experiences of people inside certain phenomena, such as how they feel about a specific scenario or occurrence. Grounded theory research, on the other hand, would seek to create a theory that clarifies how and why individuals act in a particular manner. For instance, grounded theory research would seek to provide a theory of how grieving works.
