Why has body-hair removal shifted from a choice to a necessity for women discussion

  1. Is being groomed and hairless a norm that primarily affects women? Do you agree with the author of the article, Katrina Onstad, who argues "for women, waxing seems to have shifted from choice to routine necessity?" What are examples of particular women who have resisted the beauty norm of being hairless, besides Lady Gaga? In your opinion, have they been accepted for this norm violation or shamed?
  2. How are norms associated with body hair changing for men and women? What are specific examples that you can think of? How has being hairless or hairy come in and out of style for women and men at different moments in time?
  3. Onstad argues the following:

"The problem arises when the fantasy [of being hairless] eclipses the reality [of being hairy], and the reality [of being hairy] comes to seem revolting and deviant....but when a beauty treatment goes from playful to imperative, when the real, hairy body no longer has a place in the masculine (or feminine, if we're headed that way) imagination, when pain and money become the standard-then sexy is dead"
