Bethany, a fourth-grade student with a learning disability, struggles with language arts and can't keep up with the reading for literature, social studies, or science. Mr. Novak has met with Bethany's mom, a single parent who works two jobs and has two children. Bethany's mom explained in the parent-teacher conference that she hardly sees her children, and Bethany has a lot of responsibilities for her younger sibling. Mr. Novak knows that Bethany needs help with reading beyond what he can provide during class, but he's reluctant to assign extra homework that requires parent tutoring.
