Epidemiology is a vital scientific study that studies disease, its incidence, where it is most prevalent and strategies to control spreading. This study is frequently looked to in the presence of an increase in a novel disease that is clustered to a specific area(s). In the event of a new disease, agencies like the World Health Organization will receive reports regarding the epidemic and create an informal report of the new illness allowing public health officials to act before a formal study is complete (Nsubuga et al., 2006). In the case of SARS in 2002 the WHO became aware of the disease spreading in multiple Asian countries and, "a preliminary case definition was established on the basis of initial epidemiologic investigations. A novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV) was identified as the causative agent in March, and mapping of the full genome was completed in April" (Nsubuga et al., 2006). The WHO was able to quickly collect data of the novel disease spread and initiate interventions on control of the disease while starting a formal study of SARS. This is why epidemiology and data collection is so important, it allows for prompt response and control of the disease process in question.

In my nursing practice I apply epidemiology every day I work by screening newly admitted patients for COVID-19. Every new patient that is admitted to my floor will be PUI for COVID-19 with contact airborne precautions in place, until a negative COVID test is released. This helps halt the spread of COVID-19 and keeps our staff safe from potentially getting sick themselves.
