Case Conceptualization
Alex and Carol are a married couple who have been together for seven years. Alex is an artist and high school teacher, and Carol is a high school art teacher. They met at a school camp that combined teachers from many cities in Canada, and they liked each other and had many common interests. They have been married for seven years with no complications or problems. Lately, Carol has noticed a change in Alex's behavioural pattern which includes spending long hours on the computer late into the night and deleting the history often, and he has started to neglect some house duties. Upon further investigation, Carol found that Alex had been visiting a chatroom. The primary presenting problem is Alex's behavioural change, which is causing tension in their marriage. Alex's behaviour is likely driven by underlying issues such as stress, lack of communication, emotional disconnection, a lack of emotional responsiveness and unmet needs. Additionally, issues of trust need to be addressed with Alex's deletion of his browsing history and Carlo's investigation into Alex's internet activity, which maintains their problem. Carol has some doubts that Alex has relationships with other women or that he may visit sexual websites. When she asks him about his long hours on his computer, he answers that he is completing his schoolwork, and she cannot trust his words because she can feel and see weird behaviours. During the session, Carol commented that she feels unimportant, neglected, pushed aside and unwanted, which leads to her frustration and inability to communicate with her husband, as she sees him as another person different from the person she married.
In order to address these issues, Alex and Carol must work together to develop an open and honest environment to explore the issues. They will need to focus on understanding each other better, and learning how to effectively communicate and address their emotions, emotional dynamics and needs. Additionally, they will need to work on developing trust and rebuilding their relationship. Consequently, emotionally focused therapy is a suitable approach to assist the couple in resolving their issues. This therapy focuses on emotional regulation and improving partner-emotional connections. Emotionally focused therapy would help in developing effective strategies for managing conflicts, communication, acceptance, and understanding.
