Luna's Social Class Assignment
This assignment requires you to complete the weekly materials including but not limited to Luna's Single Welfare Mothers' Resistance and The Original Welfare Queen (podcast). Once you've finished the materials, answer the questions and submit your assignment by the due date indicated on the course schedule. Attach your completed assignment as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file only.
Answer the following questions in no less than one, strong paragraph foreach question. Include the word pineapple in one of the responses.
Your responses should include sociological terminology, concepts, examples, and/or theories, should clearly demonstrate your completion of the course materials, and should address all aspects of the question. Over generalized responses are unlikely to earn a high grade.
1. Describe the overt and covert strategies used by the women in Luna's (2013) focus groups to resist the "pejorative constructions" associated with receiving welfare benefits (224).
2. In her study, Luna found participants tended to view other welfare recipients not as similar to themselves, but instead the same way they are viewed by dominant culture. How did women in her study distance themselves from welfare recipients more generally? Why did they do this?
3. At the end of the article, Luna argues that changing our ideas and public policies related to the welfare experience requires the "lived experience of welfare recipients" (234). Do you agree? Explain your response.
4. Luna's article was written nearly four decades after the first news story broke regarding Linda Taylor, the "Original Welfare Queen" referenced in the Code Switch episode. Given that four decades and multiple welfare reforms have occurred, why does the stereotype of the "welfare queen" remain so pervasive?
