The Response that I chose is below
The interactionist perspective looks at how people create meaning through interactions. There are several factors that help explain why Joe Biden may face more negative stereotypes about aging than Donald Trump. Trump has built an image of strength and energy with his bold, assertive style, which people often link to youth. Biden comes across as more forgetful, fragile, and has a slower speaking style that some interpret as a sign of aging or cognitive decline. The media also plays a role as they often focus on Trump's assertiveness while highlighting Biden's slip-ups or pauses in speech. Trump's focus on projecting toughness and power help him resist age-related stereotypes. While Biden's more traditional approach to leadership can make his age more noticeable. Furthermore, individuals relate these public figures to people they know within their interpersonal relationships. For example, Biden reminds me a lot of my grandfather with dementia as they talk the same, sound the same, and tend to forget things. These factors of how they present themselves, media portrayals, interpersonal connections, and public perceptions explain why Biden is often related to negative aging stereotypes than Trump.
Questions:
- Do you feel that individuals around Trump and Biden's age should be running our country? Why or why not?
- Why does our society have a negative view on elders? What can we do to change this notion?
