Assignment: In his essay, Leibniz provides an elaborate classification of the "different kinds and the criteria of ideas and knowledge." One problem with Leibniz's discussion is that he often uses the terms 'knowledge', 'ideas', and 'concepts' interchangeably, as though they all referred to the same thing, without explaining the various ways in which each of these items are related to one another. Since knowledge requires truth, and ideas are not themselves either true or false, it follows that knowledge is propositional: the things we know we express by means of propositions. But if that is correct, why does Leibniz think that the classification he gives for different kinds of knowledge (e.g., clear/obscure, distinct/confused, etc.,) also apply to different kinds of ideas or concepts (e.g., clear/obscure, distinct/confused)? And if they apply, how do they apply (e.g., how might confused knowledge covary with confused concepts)?
