Assignment:

Why does Kant think it is an act of respect to execute murderers? How is he using his categorical imperatives to reach such a conclusion?

Nathanson claims that if we follow Kant's principles, we will be raping rapists, torturing torturers, kidnapping kidnappers, and so on. Is this a fair representation of Kant's position? Why, or why not?

Second, Nathanson says that since we can only approximate what is due as a punishment, we do not need to execute murderers to have justice. We can approximate taking away a life by a really long jail sentence. He argues that all we need is a sliding scale where then most severe crimes get the most punishments, but we don't literal need life for a life? Does Nathanson's sliding scale (SOMETHING LIKE LIFE IMPRISONMENT) provide true justice for murderers? Who offers the better way to respect a murders choices? Kant or Nathanson?
