Each of these dots represent the building of one federal or state prison institution (not local jails) in the United States. They are color coded and they also represent chronological time: Green Dots represent prisons built from the year 1778 to 1900, Yellow Dots from 1901 to 1940, Orange Dots from 1941-1980, and Red Dots from 1981 to 2005. What is Rucker's argument? How and why does the pace and tempo of the music change over time? Why does he begin with a blank canvas? He could have started with a map/outline of the United States and then inserted the dots into that map.

Instead, he makes the reader of this text wait to discover the meaning of these dots as they accumulate over time.
