Question - Madness of Crowds Discussion

Description - This week we're all going to look at the same argument and analyze it. Specifically, we will be playing and thinking about The Wisdom and/or Madness of Crowds, which is a browser game by Nicky Case (they/them). They have made a job for themselves creating games which also work as essays and arguments.

First, you should play their game here. It should take about thirty minutes. I encourage you to read all the extra comments Case includes, especially since they are effectively footnotes to their argument and can give you an idea of how to include ancillary information to your own essays in a way that supports your point without distracting from it.

In your first post (due Wednesday), choose ONE of the following threads and write a 100-150 response.

Thread 1: Why does Case choose to use a game as the genre for their essay? How does this help convey their argument? How might it hurt their argument?

Thread 2: Case's style is hand-drawn and cute. They choose to show the people involved as tiny balls that resemble diagrams of molecules and give each a personal face that also follows the cursor around the screen. These particular aspects don't convey any information about Case's argument, so what is the reasoning behind Case's choice here? How do the design elements of the game work to influence the reader?

Thread 3: Case uses a game in order to make their argument. One of the strengths of a game is that it includes the reader in the argument itself, causing them to be involved in how it plays out. How would you make a similar argument in another genre? Explain how you would use the strengths of another genre to help involve and convince your reader.
