Question 1. According to Nicholas Carr, what has been the effect of the internet on the way we read, think, and live been? What evidence does he offer to support his claims? How does his discussion of the changes we wrought by other technologies help him make his argument?

Question 2. Sergey Brin has noted, "Some say Google is God. Others say Google is Satan. But if they think Google is too powerful, remember that with search engines, unlike other companies, all it takes is a single click to go to another search engine." How does Carr's essay support or challenge this assertion? Why do you think this topic elicits such strong responses?

Question 3. Where in his argument does Carr incorporate other viewpoints? How successfully does he deal with them?

Question 4. Why does Carr begin and end by referring to HAL from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey? How do the quotes he chooses from the film help him appeal to his audience?
