Question: Is it better to focus on what is wrong with one's life or on what is right? Research (Emmons & McCullough, 2003) has shown that having a grateful outlook has a positive effect on one's well-being. In one study, participants kept daily records of up to five things for which they were grateful or thankful for in their lives. Compared to a control group or another group of participants who focused on daily hassles, the grateful participants experienced fewer symptoms of physical illness, felt better about their lives as a whole, were more optimistic about the future, and spent significantly more time exercising.

Explain the finding. Is gratitude generally a pleasant emotion? Why or why not? What about its negative side? Gratitude also means that one is a recipient of someone's favor, that one is indebted, or even dependent on another person. Feeling that you need to reciprocate could be an unpleasant emotion. So why does being reminded that you should be grateful have a positive effect on emotional and even physical health?
