After reading the RL Wolfe: Implementing Self-Directed Teams case from the HBSP course pack and going through the lecture PPT, please answer the following questions. You are expected to conduct the discussion in the discussionboards under your group link for each question. You may post either an original response to the questions or a substantive response to one of your group member's posts for at least 3 of the questions. You must respond in some manner to all questions for the week. All groups will receive the same questions. Once the group has decided upon an answer for each question, each group member will individually turn in the answers through the Blackboard assignment portal link.
A note about online discussions: Discussions require the back-and-forth exchange of facts, experiences and opinions. These should be treated as "conversations" about the cases. As such, the starting grade for this assignment will be dependent upon the quality of answer given by the group. Your grade may be lowered compared to the group, if you did not participate as required.
Questions to Answer:
Self-directed teams are teams that are given substantial control over decisions about and execution of a complete range of tasks (e.g. acquiring materials, performance standards, quality control, choosing projects to take on, and in fully autonomous teams even the makeup of the team itself).
What are the advantages and limitations of group decision making? Where do we see both in the self-directed teams in this case?
In terms of both personnel management and plant policy, how would you address the identified areas of struggle between the workforce and plant management? Where would you set the boundary in decision making between the self-directed teams and management?
Compare and contrast the new plant to the old plant in terms of work design (think back to the week on motivation). Identify and rank order the most challenging problems.
Why does Amasi decide to use this work system at the new Corpus Christi plant? Explain his decision-making process using either the classical or bounded rationality model of decision making. (Please explicitly identify each step in which ever process you choose).
If you were Amasi, how would you present the benefits of the self-directed team concept and the reasons for continuing the "Corpus Christi Experiment" to the unionized workforce in the other two Wolfe plants?
