Assignment: Amanda is a recent health education graduate from a university in the Southwest who has been hired by a hospital to deliver patient education, especially in the area of lifestyle modification for patients with diabetes. In her studies for obtaining her degree in health education, she took a theory class in which she was exposed to several behavior change theories. She was particularly interested in the transtheoretical model (TTM) and appreciated the stages of change. She has identified two behaviors-physical activity and healthy nutrition-for lifestyle modification among her patients with diabetes and plans on using TTM. She has shared her plans with her supervisor. However, her supervisor has posed several questions to her, and she is in a quandary as to how to answer them. Her supervisor's questions are presented below.
Question: Questions for Discussion
1. Why do you want to use TTM and not another model?
2. How will you assess the stage of change of your participants?
3. How will you have the buy-in of your participants in your program?
4. What are the behavioral objectives and outcomes of your educational program?
5. TTM has many processes and constructs. Which ones do you plan to use for your program, and why?
6. What activities will you choose for each construct of TTM, and why?
7. How long will your educational intervention be?
8. How will you evaluate your program for success?
9. What measures will you use to track your participants?
