After watching Dr. Alejandro Sánchez Alvarado's TED Talk about solving old problems using new species, please thoughtfully discuss the following questions with your peers. What questions do you have about this TED talk for the presenter? What led you to these questions and/or why do you think they are important to ask?

Dr. Sánchez Alvarado mentions early on in the talk that science "is not a self-aggrandizing enterprise, because in this type of discovery research, if you don't feel like a complete idiot most of the time, you're just not sciencing hard enough." What is your response to this statement?

Dr. Sánchez Alvarado states that "we need to renew our spirit of exploration" in how we do scientific research. If you were the head of the National Science Foundation or the National Institutes of Health and controlled one of the budgets that largely dictate the types of projects that get completed in the United States, how would you go about promoting more explorative science?
