Assignment:

1) Watch If A Tree Falls.

The FBI has called the ELF "America's number one domestic terrorist threat" and McGowan faces life in prison for his actions depicted in the film. Why do you think the FBI sees McGowan and the ELF this way? What types of terrorism or characteristics of terrorist activity do you see portrayed in the film? We as a society apply the term "terrorism" to many different types of actions. Do you think the term accurately describes the actions of the individual(s) in the film? Why or why not?

Explore the "other side" of this action. Looking at McGowan, how does one become involved in a group like the ELF? What insights does the film give into why people commit acts like his?

2) Do some online investigating. Select an extremist group that we have not discussed in this week's materials and tell us about their motives, mission, and tactics/strategies.

  • Who joins this group or who does the group try to appeal to?
  • What brings this group together (from what you can tell)?
  • How do they attempt to achieve their goal?
  • How do they gain (or attempt to gain) public attention?

Provide at least one source to support your findings.
