Question: Sonia is a nurse practitioner student who is completing her final clinical in an ambulatory internal medicine/primary care setting. She is caring for Lea, a 42-year-old woman who visited the office last week for ongoing fatigue and generalized malaise and weakness. Sonia conducted several blood tests on Lea (called a panel of laboratory tests) and told her she would get back to her with the results. Sonia's supervisor concurred with the laboratory tests Sonia requested but also added a human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) test to the panel to rule out pregnancy as the cause of Lea's symptoms. Sonia accessed the laboratory work via the computerized system and found all of Lea's laboratory test results were within normal limits with the exception of the hCG levels, which were elevated, indicating pregnancy. This afternoon Sonia picked up the phone to dial Lea's number and inform her of the results. The call went to Lea's voice mail, and, as Sonia prepared to leave a message, she hesitated?
