As you learned in the readings for this week, Classical styles first emerged in ancient Greece and were adopted also by the ancient Romans. But there have been many revivals of Classical style over the centuries--during the Carolingian period of the early Middle Ages, during the Italian Renaissance, and during the Enlightenment, to name a few. Moreover, Classical styles continue to be practiced in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries (as the building covered in Discussion 1 illustrates).

Why do you think Classicism has had such perennial appeal in Western civilization, and why do artists, architects, and writers continue to find inspiration in Classical style?
