Question: "The Sentinel" is a great example of an open plot--as I discuss at length in the video lecture; it is also a great example of a story with an epiphany, as I also discuss in the video lecture (though I think I neglected to use the word epiphany, instead referring to it as a profound psychological event).

The first thing I'd like you to discuss is whether or not you think we have moved beyond atomic energy as an existential threat; have we made "the last choice between life and death"?

The second thing I'd like you to discuss is Clarke's representation (or lack of) of aliens in "The Sentinel." Think about how it differs from what we saw in "Shambleau" and "A Martian Odyssey." Why do you think Clarke decided to take this approach rather than follow in the mold of Moore and Weinbaum? And how would it have changed the story to see the aliens?
