Assignment:
1. First, imagine you are a member of the Port's "Holiday Decorations Advisory Committee." What would be your recommendation for the airport's holiday display? How would you argue for your recommendation and convince others of your view?
2. Next, using the language from the third paragraph of the reading by Eck, how would you categorize your recommendation? Exclusionist, assimilationist, or pluralist? Explain what that category means and why your holiday display recommendation fits into that category.
3. Next, think about the two other categories that don't describe your recommended holiday display. What do you think would be the recommendation for the holiday display for each of those viewpoints? For example, if you classify your holiday display recommendation as assimilationist, what would an exclusionist and a pluralist each recommend for the holiday display? Be sure to explain what each category means and why each would recommend a certain holiday display.
4. We bring our own backgrounds and bias with us to every situation and encounter with others and this shapes the way we understand and approach the world around us. Think through what parts of your own identity and personal experiences shape the way you reacted to the case study and your recommendation about the holiday display and share with your peers. Be specific.
5. Christianity is so normalized in American society that it often holds an unnoticed privilege. For example, Christians get off work for all of their major religious holidays while other religious traditions typically do not. When thinking about the "Christmas Tree Crisis" case study, do you think Christian privilege is at play here? Why or why not?
