Case Study: Thomas is a newly licensed mental health counselor who just started working for a small group practice. While reviewing his new clients with his supervisor, he notices that one of his new clients identifies as transgender and uses the pronouns he/him/his, which is different from their biological sex. According to this client's intake, they are presenting with symptoms of depression and are looking to "feel happier." They feel confident in their gender identity and do not want to talk about or process issues related to gender and sexuality in session. Thomas feels well equipped to help treat the client's depression symptoms, but explains to his supervisor that he does not agree with the client's lifestyle or family values, and he would like to be given a different client instead.
