Assignment:
The Book of Job doesn't answer the question of, "why do the righteous suffer?" Neither does it answer the question, "why bad things happen to good people." That's not what the book of Job is trying to answer. That is why people will often read Job, looking for an answer: "Why do I suffer? Why do bad things happened to me?" and they come away frustrated b/c Job does not really answer that question.
So why does the book of Job not answer the problem of suffering? B/c the case of Job is unique. Job is specifically declared to be righteous in the eyes of God. None of the suffering that came upon him was b/c he had sinned. We have a very different situation in Job. In Job there is a philosophical problem...Job is a righteous man who has been given terrible affliction. What does that say about the justice of God? That is what the book of Job is trying to answer. It's not read to be comforted b/c it doesn't bring comfort.
